LOVE AND BEAUTY ARE THE POWERS SUPREME
L’AMORE E LA BELLEZZA SONO I POTERI SUPREMI
Love and beauty are recurring themes in Jan Fabre's theatre work.
Troubleyn/Jan Fabre is the theatre company of the Belgian artist Jan Fabre. Jan Fabre is a benchmark in Belgian, European and international theatre history. Since the late 1970s, Fabre has created a body of work that has caused a landslide in the performing arts. From the very start of his career, Fabre was invited to present his work in major international theatre houses. This international dimension of his work has only grown over the years. His unique place in the Western theatre canon was recently confirmed by his inclusion in the prestigious series The Great European Stage Directors (Methuen/Drama), supervised by the influential theatre historian Simon Shepherd. The series begins with Stanislavski and ends with Jan Fabre. The other two contemporaries included in the final volume of the eight-volume book series are Pina Bausch and Romeo Castellucci.
Fabre produces a huge variety of productions throughout his career. A constant therein is also the difference in format: besides the large group creations, he also has a preference for the monologues and the solos. They are always written on the body of his performers, interweaving motifs and fantasies from their own biography with obsessions of Fabre himself and thus often forming an ode to the main "warriors of beauty" as Fabre calls his performers. The monologues are also the main area of Fabre's dramatic oeuvre: they are texts in which Fabre questions artistry, sometimes comically, philosophically, politically, and always poetically. Many of these monologues and solos are in the repertoire for several seasons, performed in different languages and touring the world. Many of them have also been translated into several languages and published by prominent international publishers. Jan Fabre’s theatre plays are published in Italian by Editoria & Spettacolo and the Night Diaries are published by Cronopio.
With this unique festival presented by TEATRO OUTxOFF, MILAN, multiple never-before-seen monologues will be showcased. These solos are conceptual in nature, poetic, and materialize ancient rituals and themes that fascinate Jan Fabre, as well as philosophical questions that obsess him.
