FABRE FESTIVAL 2025 | JAN FABRE E MINO BERTOLDO - 40 ANNI DI POESIA DELLA RESISTENZA | MILAN

@ Teatro Out Off, Milan

From October 3 to 30, Teatro Out Off is once again hosting the Fabre Festival. This second edition bears the significant title Jan Fabre and Mino Bertoldo: 40 Years of the Poetry of Resistance, celebrating not only four decades of collaboration between Jan Fabre and Teatro Out Off, under the direction of Mino Bertoldo, but also a long-standing friendship and artistic partnership that began in 1985. The encounter between Fabre and Bertoldo dates back to that year, during the Sussurri o grida festival, conceived and curated by Bertoldo himself. It was on this occasion that the young Jan Fabre was invited to present his groundbreaking performance The Power of Theatrical Madness at the Teatro Nazionale in Milan. At the time, Out Off was a nomadic theatre company without a permanent venue. In 1987, Fabre was invited back to Milan to perform at Spazio Krizia as part of the Theatre and Communication symposium, again organized by Bertoldo on the occasion of the David Campbell-Harris award — a moment of reflection on the meaning and purpose of theatre. Their profound friendship remained intact over the years. In 2004, Fabre inaugurated the new Out Off venue on Via Mac Mahon with the performance The Crying Body. Twenty years later, in 2023, he returned to Out Off with the Italian premiere of Peak Mytikas (On the Top of Mount Olympus), an ambitious, eight-hour-long performance. That same November, Teatro Out Off also hosted the first Milan-based workshop of the Jan Fabre Teaching Group. In 2024, the theatre's 49th season opened with a new edition of the Fabre Festival, entitled Love and Beauty Are the Powers Supreme. This edition featured five new productions by the Troubleyn/Jan Fabre company, all written and directed by Fabre himself. Among them were two world premieres, Io sono un errore performed by Irene Urciuoli, and I’m sorry featuring Stella Höttler, along with three Italian premieres.

The Fabre Festival returns this October with a new program running from the 3rd to the 30th October. The edition opens with two world premieres: La poésie de la résistance, on October 3, 4, and 8 and performed by Annabelle Chambon and Cédric Charron; and A Tribe, That’s is me, performed by Irene Urciuoli on October 10, 11, and 22. Also returning to the stage are two works that had their Italian premieres at last year’s festival: I Believe in the Legend of Love, with Ivana Jozić, on October 17 and 18, and Io sono un errore, again with Irene Urciuoli, on October 24 and 25. Rounding out the program are two performances based on Fabre’s texts. On October 14 and 15, The King of Plagiarism will be presented, adapted, directed, and performed by Roberto Trifirò, in a new 2025 production by Teatro Out Off. On October 29 and 30, Giornale Notturno (1978–2012) will be performed by Carolina Migli Bateson, directed by Edoardo Callegari and Bateson herself.

As in previous editions, the festival will also feature two Jan Fabre Teaching Group masterclasses. The first, from September 30 to October 8, will be led by Annabelle Chambon and Cédric Charron; the second, from October 20 to 28, will be conducted by Irene Urciuoli.

PERFORMANCES

LA POÉSIE DE LA RÉSISTANCE
with Annabelle Chambon & Cédric Charron

La poésie de la résistance / The Poetry of Resistance is a powerful, engaged theater text, written by Jan Fabre in 2024, that celebrates the strength of art, poetry, and resistance against oppression. In a poetic and rhythmic manifesto, two performers present themselves as members of an artistic resistance movement, fighting non-violently against censorship, suppression, and conformity.... UNA TRIBÙ, ECCO QUELLO CHE SONO
With Irene Urciuoli

A tribe, that's is me (2004) is Jan Fabre's poetic perspective on the work of theater visionary Antonin Artaud, the “founder” of the Théâtre de la Cruauté (1938). This cruelty is not physical, but spiritual: an invitation to return to raw, unfiltered truth... [READ MORE]

IL RE DEL PLAGIO
With Roberto Trifirò

Jan Fabre 's The King of Plagiarism returns to the stage as part of the second edition of the Fabre Festival, directed, dramatized, and starring Roberto Trifirò. The play is a profound reflection on the theme of authenticity in art; one of Fabre's "manifesto" monologues on his idea of the artist's place in the world. The King of Plagiarism is the charlatan artist, who defends imitation as a tool of beauty and fragility for creating art and, at the same time, for shaping his own artistic identity...  [READ MORE]

I BELIEVE IN THE LEGEND OF LOVE
with Ivana Jozic

Jan Fabre wrote I believe in the legend of love in the form of a letter from a man to his beloved. The outcome is a truly personal text, about loving and letting go...[READ MORE]

“…Jozić returns again and again to a letter consumed not just by the dilemma of life and death, but also by love. Love, which emerges as the ultimate (and most important) theme of this performance, a performance that will be remembered by many as avant-garde, sincere, free from pretension and false moralizing, yet deeply emotional and, above all, artistically magical.” - Magdalena Mrčela | Dalmacija Danas

IO SONO UN ERRORE | I AM A MISTAKE
With Irene Urciuoli

I am a mistake is a theatre text written by Jan Fabre in 1988. It is a manifest that amounts almost to a profession of faith by the artist. The blunt confession I am a mistake is like a mantra that repeats and divides... [READ MORE]

… the presence of Irene Urciuoli, an Italian performer who has been in Fabre's company for six years, emerges: delicate and concrete, she stands out for her precision and suppleness, her physical and evocative strength in the struggle for the power of beauty.” - Anna Bandettini | La Repubblica

GIORNALE NOTTURNO (1978 - 2012)
with Carolina Migli Bateson

Giornale notturno is a visionary and disarming hymn by artist Jan Fabre, offering an intimate and provocative journey through his life, from youth to the present day. These pages explore the role of the body, both spiritual and material, cultural and visceral. In this play, Fabre's last published diaries, never before presented on stage, are also explored....[READ MORE]

JAN FABRE TEACHING GROUP 5-DAY MASTERCLASSES

Following the extraordinary experiences of 2023 and 2024, Teatro OUTxOFF in Milan is organizing two new 5-Day Jan Fabre Teaching Group masterclasses.

The contemporary performer unites performance, theatre, and dance. Fabre always looks for physical impulses in and on the bodies of his performers and stimulates them to act on stage on the basis of those ‘real’ physical sensations. Fabre uses the expression ‘from act to acting’ to describe that process: the real physical impact (tension, pain stimulus, exhaustion, etc.) becomes part of what happens on stage. The physiological processes in the actor’s body radiate in the hall, as it were, so that the pain, tension, and exhaustion also affect the audience.
