THE FABLIAUX
— Rhapsody for One Actor —

A wild, satirical and visually explosive theatrical experience inspired by the outrageous medieval fabliaux and the radical spirit of Dario Fo’s Mistero Buffo.

The Fabliaux plunges audiences into a whirlwind of grotesque comedy, physical transformation and biting satire, where the Middle Ages collide with the present day. Drawing from the scandalous comic tales of 13th-century France, the performance reinvents these ancient stories through a fiercely contemporary lens, revealing how little humanity has really changed.

Fast-moving, unpredictable and deeply alive, the show fuses storytelling, clowning, physical theatre, contemporary dance and commedia dell’arte into a theatrical ride that constantly shifts in rhythm, tone and form. One moment hilarious, the next surreal or unsettling, The Fabliaux keeps audiences suspended between laughter and reflection.

On stage, a single performer transforms an empty space into an entire universe. With only the body, the voice and a few simple elements, characters and worlds appear and vanish in front of the audience’s eyes: fools, peasants, knights, hermits, animals and ghosts emerge in a continuous flow of invention and transformation.

Playful, provocative and fiercely physical, The Fabliaux tears apart theatrical conventions while exposing the absurdities and contradictions of contemporary society. Through grotesque humour and razor-sharp satire, the performance asks an unsettling question: are we really more modern than the people who lived centuries ago?

No two performances are ever the same. Adapting to each audience and space, The Fabliaux becomes a unique live encounter, raw, immediate and joyfully theatrical.

"A leap from the Middle Ages to the contemporary world, and back again. The fabliaux, precursors of the Decameron, were instruments of entertainment and subversion: they ridiculed power, dominant morality and social conventions. Their direct, explicit language still resonates today for its ability to lay bare the contradictions of society. The performance does not simply reproduce these tales; rather, it uses them as a starting point to build an ongoing dialogue between past and present."  - Savino Maria Italiano
