An encounter with Robert Wilson


Twice a year, Troubleyn/Laboratorium hosts masterclasses given by international ‘grandmasters’ (directors, choreographers, dancers and actors). These series with ‘Masters of the 21st Century’ are aimed at professional actors, dancers, and performers, who want to upgrade their knowledge and skills. 

After masterclasses with Anatoly Vasiliev, Emio Greco, Franz Marijnen, Viviane De Muynck, Raimund Hoghe, Theodoros Terzopoulos & Savvas Stroumpos and Peter Brook, we are extremely honoured to welcome Mr. Robert Wilson in our Troubleyn/Laboratorium on MAY 21st & 22nd 2018

On Monday May 21st, Robert Wilson will present a lecture/performance entitled '1 HAVE YOU BEEN HERE BEFORE / 2 NO THIS IS THE FIRST TIME.

On Tuesday May 22nd, a selected group of participants can attend a Masterclass.




Born in Waco-Texas, Robert Wilson (°1941) is among the world’s foremost vanguard theater and visual artists. His works for the stage unconventionally integrate a wide variety of artistic media, including dance, movement, lighting, sculpture, music and text. His images are aesthetically striking and emotionally charged, and his productions have earned the acclaim of audiences and critics worldwide. Wilson is also the founder and Artistic Director of The Watermill Center, a laboratory for the Arts in Water Mill, New York.

In an exceptional performance of nearly three hours, director and artist Robert Wilson invites us into his astonishing aesthetic universe. Combining hundreds of striking images from through his prolific career, Wilson provides an intimate self-portrait of his creative process. Mr. Wilson references his landmark original works for the stage such as "Deafman Glance", "A Letter for Queen Victoria", "Einstein on the Beach" (created with composer Philip Glass), "The CIVIL warS", and "The Black Rider", as well as his acclaimed work for the operatic and theatrical repertoire, including his luminous stagings of "Madama Butterfly", "Wagner’s Ring Cycle", "The Magic Flute", Ibsen’s "Peer Gynt" and Heiner Müller’s "Quartett". At the conclusion of the lecture-performance, the audience is invited to explore Mr. Wilson’s ideas further during an informal question-and-answer period.

Candidates (actors, dancers, performers, directors...) can send their compact CV (one A4 + photo) by mail to and this before May 15th 2018. The selection of the candidates will be made in agreement with Robert Wilson as soon as possible. As there has a been a previous call for candidates (due to a postponed event), participants of this previous round have priority.
